At Vintage Udfordring, the wonderfully talented Nina, is hosting a ‘blue & brown’ challenge~ There are just so many possibilities with this color combination that it can be a challenge to choose a direction and start! So, I began with the thought of a special birthday card that I want to make for a Christmas day baby. She’s all grown up, but it’s easy to be overlooked in the midst of all the holiday hussle and bustle. Rather than send a flat card, I thought an exploding box would make more of a statement. It arrives with the lid in place, tied with a white silk ribbon and a glittered snowflake to top it off…
It is a four inch cube and weighs very little. Inside, there is a swirl of snowflakes at different angles and heights, supported by thin strips of clear acrylic that I cut from packaging…
I used a Bo Bunny paper with swirls of glittering blue on top of a lovely snowflake pattern. In the center, I created a serene little winter scene with two bottle brush trees supporting the sentiment banner and the silhouettes of two deer…one standing alert and the other grazing…
The die cut snowflakes were covered in glue and dipped into a crystal, coarse glitter for maximum sparkle. They are of different sizes and shapes and are attached to the box with thin stems of clear acrylic that I cut from a die package. Little tabs of the acrylic were attached under the edges of the paper panels, bent to different angles and the snowflakes were glued on. It’s important to think about how the flakes will fit within the closed box!!!…
The stems seem to disappear, but you can see some of them in the photo above. I have searched around the internet, looking for a straightforward set of instructions on how to make this sort of box. There are lots of people making them, but I didn’t find a single one that gave the basics in a clear and concise manner, so I’m adding this to my ‘make a video of this’ list!
Wishing you happiness found in simple things…until next time~
Hugs,
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca!
I love your explosion box & know the birthday girl will love it too. Love all of the various snowflakes & how you attached them to pop out of the box. Very clever of you. Love the deer, the gold trees & all the glitter. So very pretty!
It was so very sweet of you to remember her on her special day when she probably gets over looked a lot. My daughter was born exactly 2 weeks before Christmas & we never put the tree up until after her birthday celebration.
Huggies ~
