a handmade box…

This week, the very sweet and creative Sue , of the Design Team of Frilly & Funky, is hosting a challenge called, ‘Anything But a Card..with a twist!’   She says, “It’s time to let your imagination run wild, you could be thinking of a 3D project, an altered item or keeping it simple with a tag but there is a twist ! You must include somewhere to hide something, this could be a flap, an envelope, a pocket or even a gift box with something inside ! Have fun !”  What a great place to start Sue!!  So many ideas.. I settled on a project I’ve been wanting to make for some time…

I love wooden sewing spools and I love little boxes, especially ones that give you a peek inside!

The lid begins with a beautifully shaped die, cut once from the patterned paper and again from card stock, to form the window and clear acetate rescued from packaging, sandwiched between these layers.  It’s embellished with the sweetest tiny spools and distress inked, both from The Funky Junkie Boutique.

Inside are six sweet, medium wooden spools (also from The Funky Junkie Boutique), decorated with scraps of patterned papers and wound with bits of textile ‘treasure’!  A 1/4″circle punch, followed by a 3/4″ punch makes these little ‘lifesaver’ shaped accents to glue onto each end of the spools for a finished look.  It’s always easier to punch the smaller center hole first and then the outer ring…

The choice of ribbons/yarns and embellishments are such fun to customize for the recipient.  You can print my templates and instructions from HERE.  I hope you have fun with all the variations and themes you can make from this project!  If you give it a try, I would love to see what you make!!!!

Wishing you happiness found in simple things~ Until next time…

*Hugs*
